Anybody been discriminated at work for having RA?
I was talking to my previous manager some months ago about whether I will be fit to a course and I said that I may not be, and she said that this means it could have "implications", I didn't push it any further but I was sooooo angry!!

Quick Answer is YES! But that's not a lot of help. Have you got the leaflets from NRAS - aimed at the employers. The last time I saw one, it was in the hands of an HR person, who obviously not bothered to read it. If I gave advice, I'd say you should keep a 'diary' of these incidents from the very beginning - hopefully you will not need it in the long run, but it is there if you do.

Good luck with this, Chris, I am sure others will have good advice

hello everone, i'm going through this at the minute at work, i have woked there for 7 years and no one has every had a problem with how i do my job, i took 4 weeks of work, due to bad flare's and the drugs, on my return 2 weeks ago i was told they dont want a supervisor with an illness?????? i got legal representation, and spoke with nras, i now go to work and watch them squirm, the problem is total lack of understanding of the disease, there is help out there for you, although the stress of it all does have an impact on you its well worth the fight, wishing you all the luck

Yes, I took my employers to an Employment Tribunal in 2000, on the grounds of disability discrimination and won.

Hi Chris

Im coz and would like to say hang in there, it's difficult to explaine R.A to people who dont want to listen, but it is your right to work, and have people you work with understand!!

It is stressfull which is no help to you but you must stand yr ground and be heard, im sure that your employer will soon realise they cant get away with treating you like this, I wish you luck and hope things soon improve for you.

love corinne ( coz )xx

hi Chris,
i have been affected by disability "implications" at times and lately seems to happen more and more,
i think the recession is a big factor and is likely to continue to be so, there is lots of change afoot in many workplaces, it is not easy,
im staying where i am at the moment but am keen to consider possible career change options in the future - i can identify with your feelings, we've got lots to offer but sometimes its a bit of a fight pretty sure there are some fantastic employers out there somewhere tho'...
take care, love Liz xx

Hi
You may want to think about attending one of the series of WorkWiseWorkshops that are taking place across the UK. We've run 3 so far and they've been really very worthwhile for many who attended. The evening workshops start at 6.30 and run through to 9pm with a guest speakers on topics of Occupational Health, Occupational therapy and Employment law- Information on Disability discrimination act, Access to Work schemes and most useful of all of course talking to others with RA who have experienced managing to stay working and how they've done it.
for full details of the workshops visit www.nras.org.uk/workwise or email clare@nras.org.uk or call 0845 458 3969
Workshops are in Manchester, Birmingham, Nottingham, Glasgow, Londonderry, Portsmouth and Reading
